A great book idea for class!

June 2nd, 2008

Here’s a great book idea for all the teachers out there for next Fall (is it too early to be thinking about next year already?).  A great new industry book on PR entitled “Sports Publicity” was written by a highly respected industry exec (Joe Favorito) and was published last August by Reed Elsevier.

I have shared a number of conversations and email exchanges with Joe and think his book would be a tremendous addition to your class library.  Joe has over 22 years of strategic communications/marketing, business development and public relations expertise in sports, entertainment, brand building, media training, television, athletic administration and business!

Now for the really cool part:  Joe has managed the day-to-day and assisted in significantly growing exposure by creating long-term integrated communications/marketing plans for:  Two of the world’s hallmark sports and entertainment brands (the New York Knickerbockers and Philadelphia 76ers), the world’s largest professional sport for women (the WTA Tour), the world’s largest sports National Governing Body (the United States Tennis Association) and the world’s largest annual sporting event (the US Open).   Joe currently oversees the operation of the International Fight League, one of the world’s premier professional Mixed Martial Arts organizations and a publicly traded company.

He is a graduate of Fordham University and has spoken on sports publicity and marketing at Stanford Graduate School of Business, the University of Florida Law School, George Washington University, NYU, Princeton University and others.  He is also a professor in Columbia University’s Graduate School of Continuing Education.  How’s that for industry experience?

Additionally, Joe maintains a well trafficked blog on the sports marketing and publicity field, “Sports Marketing and PR Roundup,” on the website joefavorito.com, as well as handling a consulting practice with clients that include: the AVP Crocs Tour, Summit Entertainment, Octagon, The Leverage Agency, USA Wrestling, BigString Corporation and the law firm of Butler Lappert Williams, among others.  We added a link to the blog on our listing of “valuable links” on the main page of this blog in case you want to check it out.

You can email Joe for more info if you’d like at fatherknickerbocker1@yahoo.com.

The book is being used in about 25 universities around the country BUT it is certainly suitable as a supplement to any hgh school business or marketing educators current instructional material.   Sports Publicity is available through the publisher or at amazon.com.  Check it out!
